In February 2007 the members of the IAEM based in Oceania elected to form what was the fourth international region of the IAEM (Region 14). In November 2007 IAEM changed its structure and Oceania became one of six (now seven) Councils. We consist of emergency management professionals in a range of fields from around Oceania.
Our Vision: IAEM shall be recognized as a premier international organization of emergency management professionals.
Our Mission: The mission of IAEM is to serve its members by providing information, networking and professional opportunities, and to advance the emergency management profession.
In May 2007, we were duly incorporated in Australia as the International Association of Emergency Managers - Oceania Incorporated.
IAEM-Oceania Holds the Council's First AGM
By Tony Pearce, IAEM-Oceania President, and Director General, Emergency Management Australia, Attorney-General's Department, Dickson, ACT, Australia
IAEM-Oceania recently reached a milestone our first Annual General Meeting (AGM). In the 20 or so months since our creation as an IAEM Region (now Council), IAEM Oceania has grown to more than 200 members. A number of members managed to make it to Sydney on Sept. 11 for the AGM. Those who attended came from all over the Council region, including the states of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, and three members flew in from New Zealand.
AGM Program
The AGM was hosted by our Treasurer David Parsons in the Sydney Water head office building and provided a great opportunity for members to meet and discuss where they want to take IAEM Oceania in terms of member benefits and
contribution to the advancement of the emergency management profession.
In addition to the usual AGM type business, an open discussion was held and proved really productive in terms of providing feedback from members on what they want to see happen and what they want to contribute to the future of IAEM. As much of the feedback as possible will be incorporated into the IAEM Oceania three-year plan, with several actions coming into effect within the next month or two.
Recognition of First CEM's in IAEM-Oceania
The meeting also presented an opportunity to recognize the first two Certified Emergency Managers® in IAEM-Oceania. Tony Pearce, IAEM-Oceania President and IAEM-Global Professional Standards Director, presented Kristin Hoskin and Steve Glassey with their CEM® certificates and lapel pins.
Several members are currently undertaking completion of their CEM® submissions, so hopefully next year’s AGM will include many more CEM® presentations.
As part of encouraging IAEM-Oceania members to complete their CEM®, Steve Glassey presented an overview of the CEM® requirements to the attending members. He answered questions ranging from how best to present material in order to meet training and educational requirements through to what would constitute an activity that isn’t part of normal job requirements.
I want to sincerely thank the IAEM-Oceania Council Executive and our National Representatives for their dedication and combined efforts over the past 20 months, that have greatly assisted us in getting to where we are in such a short time. Thanks also to all those who attended and contributed to the AGM.
Looking Forward
It is IAEM-Oceania policy that every second AGM will include teleconferencing or Web attendance options, so next year we hope to see and hear from even more of the IAEM-Oceania membership. In the meantime, the IAEM-Oceania Executive and sub-committees can be contacted via the IAEM-Oceania Web site or through info@oceania-iaem.com.
