MEDIA STATEMENT

Due to the recent 8.3 magnitude earthquake in Samoa, the Canterbury Emergency Management Group is monitoring the current tsunami situation closely.

We are advising people in low lying coastal areas in Canterbury to be prepared to move to higher ground if required and have a radio and/or mobile telephone and essential items such as personal documents, medication, glasses and hearing aids with them at all times.

MCDEM issues National Warning Tsunami Threat to NZ

At 6:48am NZT (17:48 UTC) this morning a large, shallow earthquake occurred in the Samoa Islands Region. The earthquake generated a regional tsunami with wave heights of up to 6m reported in American Samoa. Estimates of earthquake magnitude and depth have been released by the USGS (Mw8.0, 18km depth) and PTWC (Mw8.3, fixed depth of 33km).

Oceania and Asia are planning a conference for 2010. At that conference we intend to form Council CEM Commissions. To do that we need a pool of CEMs.

Earn your CEM before the conference and you will be invited to attend the CEM Commissioner Training Day.
