Profile:
Monica Gowan holds a B.A. (Geology, Geography) from Gustavus Adolphus College, M.S. (Geology) from Western Washington University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health Preparedness, Response and Recovery from the University of Minnesota. She is a Certified Professional Geologist (American Institute of Professional Geologists #9958) and holds licenses to practise geology (Washington State Licensed Engineering Geologist and Licensed Geologist #2019; Oregon Registered Professional Geologist #G1612). Monica has worked extensively as a private consultant (GeoLogic Co.) in natural hazards assessment in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and most recently was a senior-level research coordinator in the Department of Health Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Minnesota, USA. She is currently working on a PhD at University of Canterbury Health Sciences Centre and is associated with the University of Canterbury Natural Hazards Research Centre and the Massey University/GNS Joint Centre for Disaster Research. She also holds an appointment as a Research Collaborator at Mayo Clinic. Her PhD project title is “Self-management of disaster risk and uncertainty: evaluating a preventive health approach for building resistance to disaster”. Her PhD supervisors are Ray Kirk, University of Canterbury Health Sciences Centre, David Johnston, Massey/GNS Joint Centre for Disaster Research, and Kevin Ronan, Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Central Queensland University.
